Lauren Coursey
Director of Engagement and Sustainability June 2024 - present
Where are you from?
Wayne, PA
What are the primary responsibilities of your role?
I am in charge of facilitating monthly Greater Hazelwood community meetings where residents can learn about developments and other projects and offer their feedback. I organize events throughout the year and I administer the Neighborhood Investment Fund micro-grant program. I also build partnerships with environmental nonprofits to continue my predecessor's work making Hazelwood healthier and more climate resilient. I'm often out in the community, posting flyers and attending events, so if you see me, say "hi!"
TBD
Why is this job important to you and how does your educational, professional or personal background help you to do your job well?
I did my undergraduate internship with Hazelwood Initiative in 2021, which gave me a good baseline knowledge about affordable housing. I finished my master's in social work in 2023. Since then, I've been doing a lot of community engagement work around housing policy. I've facilitated community conversations in communities with the highest eviction rates, asking for policy recommendations from people who have been evicted and applied for assistance programs. These experiences have given me a lot of insight into how public policy in general affects people, so I want to make sure people are informed about and engaged in the decisions that affect them.
What do you love about this neighborhood?
Hazelwood people want their community to be better and for everyone to have what they deserve. I am excited to get to know everybody and the whole neighborhood. I’m excited to be back. I love the energy.
